The biggest problem small retailers face when they cut prices is the margin erosion that comes with it, and the resultant slow bleed on cash. You're also spot on with regards to inventory. The key is to watch for items or categories that were turning acceptably before but are now struggling as demand goes down. It's not enough just to cut inventory, it's also important to recognize that assortment must narrow in the process as well.
